German luxury car maker Mercedes is contemplating on entering the mid range car segment in India, thus enabling more people to buy the car. This is in line with thoughts of the company to provide to the masses a luxury car one could afford. The range of these new car models will be launched in the next two to three years at a steady pace in the Indian market.
Once the company begins mid range car sales in India, they can hope that their sales increase considerably. This range of cars will fall in the price range below the C- Class segment, and thereby will be tagged lower than Rs. 28 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). These cars will be brought to India as completely knockdown units (CKU) and will be assembled in the company's plant at Chakan.
It may be still some time before an increase number of buyers take up the idea of buying luxury cars which seem slow at present due to high fuel prices, and increased interest rates. Mercedes Benz hopes to capitalize on the market because India is slated to be the third largest car market in 10 years. Mercedes Benz passenger car sales for September 2011 were 745 units, and cumulative sales for the year stand at 5635 cars.
Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, Peter Honegg had this to say. "We are positively considering to enter into mid-range segment of cars in India over the next two-three years. " "This will help us take the Mercedes brand to larger masses and increase our sales in the country." "The proposed mid-range cars will be priced below our C-Class variant, which is currently the cheapest model offered by the company."
